The Bible’s idea of love is WAY different than our idea of love today. What comes to mind when you hear the word “love”? In the Bible, there’s a word in Hebrew: Checed. Most times in our English Bibles, it’s translated into the word “kindness.” But it’s SO MUCH deeper of a word. It centers around three main ideas: unfailing love, loving kindness, and loyal love. Most times this word refers to how God views and loves us, but we’re also given the example of Jesus (1 John 3:16-18) to explicitly follow. Ultimately, Christian love towards others calls us to make our neighbor’s struggle our own struggle, to share their burden.
Challenge: who is God sending you to “checed”? Who around you is struggling, and how can you extend loyal love to them, care for them, and make their struggle your struggle? May God show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to people around you.
