Daily Devo 80 – How Idols Affect Us

On election day, my friends and I all gathered around a TV to watch as the votes came in. In one of my classes, my professor talked to us about how many people woke up extremely happy or extremely mad based on the election outcome. Sometimes, people care so much about politics that it affects their mood and attitude towards life. This got us to thinking about the root of this sort of behavior: Idolatry. People in the Bible and today all struggle against worshipping created things (idols) instead of the creator, God. We all get stuck in the trap thinking that an idol will give us what we want, but it ALWAYS empties us. God, on the other hand, ALWAYS fills us with what we need.

Challenge: ask yourself these questions to see if there are idols in your life that you need to get rid of. What do I love more than God or more than my neighbor? What are my unsatisfied wants and desires? What do I crave, long for? What desires do I obey? These are just some questions that I used in order to identify what my heart had been worshipping instead of God.

When I stopped worshipping these idols and set my eyes on the kingdom, my heart began to shift from being anxious all the time to receiving the joy, peace, and satisfaction that Jesus promises. When the idols we create cease to be worshipped, our hearts see that the only thing that should ever be worshipped is God; the God who saved us from sin and called us His child forever.
